Video showing a police officer allegedly using excessive force on a fan at a cricket match has emerged, 7News exclusively reports.
The incident occurred at the Big Bash cricket clash between Sydney and Perth at the SCG this week during an arrest.
Mobile phone video taken from within the SCG's Victor Trumper stand at close range shows an officer repeatedly punching a person hidden from view by a cluster of security staff.
7News reports a 39-year-old man from Mona Vale has been accused of resisting arrest and refusing to leave his seat after the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers match on Wednesday.
Senior police have responded by launching an internal investigation into the incident, but have defended the officers involved.
Speaking to 7News about the video NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch says police took the appropriate action to remove the man, but admitted the video footage "doesn't look great".
Murdoch said that the video he saw was isolated and police will view the incident in context in their investigation.
Tom Hughes a lawyer who spoke to 7News described the video as "sickeningly brutal" and explained that if there was an allegation of assault against an officer, charges usually followed.
Despite an absence of a formal assault charge against the man, 7News reports that a 2GB caller made alternative on-air claims about the SCG altercation.
The caller claims he walked past the police and the man talking after which the man arose to "swing at the police."
The SCG Trust has refused to comment on the matter - 20 January 2012.
