A 28 yo Mortdale man, Nathan Paul Crookston, has claimed self defense after being accussed of king-hitting a police officer in Sydney's west. Mr Crookston's legal aid lawyer said the customer service representative gave a "very, very different version of what happened." His flatmate Daryl McIntyre was also arrested and charged after being tasered in the confrontation with police. McIntyre allegedly resisted arrest, but was eventually cuffed by officers. Paramedics removed the taser probes from his back.
The NSW Police has used this incident to renew calls for tougher alcohol bans.

Two men accused of attacking a Sydney policeman, urinating in a cell and threatening to rape a custody manager have walked free from court.
They were also awarded partial costs against NSW Police.
Flatmates Nathan Paul Crookston and Daryl McIntyre, both 29, smiled with family members as they emerged from Sutherland Local Court on Monday.
Court documents say Acting Sergeant Brendan Bullock pulled over after he noticed Mr Crookston stumbling in the street at Mortdale in January 2011.
The officer was spat at and he was punched on the cheek by Mr McIntyre, the documents said.
Mr McIntyre fled and Sgt Bullock chased him on foot into a driveway where he fired his Taser, hitting him in the back.
The men's solicitor maintained the weapon was used in retribution.
Police alleged that Mr Crookston later threatened a police station custody manager, saying: "Wait till I get out, I'm gonna rape you."
He also yelled: "I'm gonna f***ing stalk you, I'm gonna wait till you get off work, f***ing follow you home and f***ing kill you."
Both men also used offensive language to women constables, calling them "sluts", court documents state.
In the past two weeks police informed the pair that most of the charges against them - including assaulting police, intimidating police and resisting arrest - would be withdrawn.
Sgt Bullock, the prosecution's key witness, has been on stress leave for most of 2011 related to his involvement in a homicide case and unable to testify.
A document tendered to the court said Sgt Bullock was unfit for work until Tuesday.
Police told the men's solicitor Andrea Turner on Monday morning that no evidence would be provided on the remaining charge of malicious damage for allegedly urinating in the police cell.
Magistrate Harriet Grahame dismissed the charge.
Applying for legal costs, Ms Turner said evidence subpoenaed from police showed Sgt Bullock told an interviewing officer in hospital that Mr McIntyre's hands were up just before he fired his Taser.
"We say it's a universal signal. Hands up means don't shoot," Ms Turner told the court.
She also said a recorded interview transcript revealed Sgt Bullock had fired in response to the assault.
"Why did you Taser me?" Mr McIntyre said.
"You assaulted me," Sgt Bullock replied.
Ms Turner said if that was true the action would have been "gross unlawful behaviour."
She also said Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch had reviewed the Taser incident and commented 'good work' in relation to Sgt Bullock's actions.
The pair applied to have all of Ms Turner's $17,000 legal fees reimbursed by NSW Police.
Magistrate Grahame ordered police pay $5,445, the amount associated with Monday's proceedings.
Outside court, Mr McIntyre was asked by reporters if he had been wrongly tasered
"Of course," he said.
Mr Murdoch later said he had reviewed the audio and video captured by the Taser and rejected the suggestion that Sgt Bullock used the weapon in retaliation.
"I wouldn't suggest (Mr McIntyre) was giving himself up at all," Mr Murdoch told AAP.
"In this instance ... clearly this was a violent situation."
"I'd say he (Sgt Bullock) had a real legitimate concern that he was about to be further assaulted.
"It's a shame the court did not get to adjudicate on this" - 22 January 2012.
